In January 2007 the Church of England in Manchester became aware that Body Worlds 4 was coming to the City of Manchester in the UK. The pre-publicity concerned us and we began and investigation into the topic.

What we uncovered about the industry concerned us so much that we thought it would be useful to bring together our discoveries into a website to better inform the public and journalists. We hope this site will become the authoritative site on this phenomenon.

Von Hagens has accused the Church of being out of touch by raising these questions, but we are very much reflecting public concern about corpse shows.

These shows are banned in Scotland. The Chief Medical Officer has confirmed that the work of von Hagens, the inventor behind Body Worlds 4, reduces organ/body donations to science.

We think marketing corpse shows to children is questionable. We have a concern for staff welfare. We want to make sure a legal loop-hole has not been used to get corpse shows in England by the backdoor.

We hope to

  • To stop organ/body donations falling

  • To get the marketing to children changed and to ensure staff are protected

  • To get the law reviewed so that publicly funded institutions don't see corpse shows as 'easy money' exhibitions

Three top questions to Von Hagens

1. The Chief Medical Officer has named your work as being responsible for a drop is organ/body donations to our NHS and medical schools. Why do you continue to persist in undermining the medical trust that the public have in their doctors?

2. Will you safeguard vulnerable UK citizens by withdrawing the 'under 5s' free entry policy,  by imposing an age limit of 18 and by allowing staff the right not to staff the corspe show?

3. Will you confirm that a legal loop-hole has not been used to secure a license to exhibit and will you submit your documentation

Body Worlds has developed a series of answers to media questions. Here are some alternative answers to the standard list of questions that they advise museums to prepare for.

Note
The subject is complicated by the amount of secrecy surrounding the donor schemes and the fact that production of corpses for display is done in Russia, China and Germany and then managed through offices in Germany and America. See our Quick facts and figures to get yourself started.

Every person in England has a legal right to ask the Church of England for spiritual help... More here

"There was another reduction in donations following the TV series 'Anatomy for Beginners' which featured public anatomy demonstrations...some intending donors specifically withdrew citing these events as the reason for withdrawing (donations of bodies to science)." Chief Medical Officer  May 2007

"Articles in the press in May and August 2005 which highlighted the shortage of body donations, led to a flood of enquiries from people who would be willing to donate their bodies, but who simply did not know how to go about it."
