Turtlewax advertising agency set to plaster Northwest with pictures of skinned corpses
Body Worlds 4 has revealed its latest bid to make corpse shows respectable by plastering Greater Manchester with massive outdoor adverts showing a dead skinless man running next to the lines "Tickets now on sale..". The advertising campaign is set roll despite the Chief Medical Officer warning that when the public see images of Dr von Hagens work on corpses, donations to the NHS and medical schools reduce.
A spokesman for the Diocese of Manchester said: "Not since the days of PT Barnum and the Victorian era has so much public money been spent on promoting a corpse show. It looks very slick, but the advertising agency is treating dead people as 'products'. I wonder if the man pictured gave his permission to be on a poster for a show that will take over £4 Million at the Box Office? I understand the agency also promotes Turtlewax products and dishwashers, they clearly have not taken into account the Chief Medical Officer concerns as they promote the Body Worlds brand".
The Church of England has designed its own poster titled "Return of the Body Snatchers" and it can be downloaded at www.CorpseShow.info . There is also a Downing Street petition.
Last week the Bishop of Manchester, the Rt Revd Nigel McCulloch, asked MoSi and Body Worlds 4 to put some money into a Manchester advertising campaign aimed at restoring the confidence of organ and body donors. But in a letter sent to the Bishop of Manchester this week they refused.
A spokesman for the Diocese said "They did agree, for the first time ever, to make available NHS donor cards inside the exhibition and amend their website warning parents about exhibition content"
Access Advertising was appointed by MoSI and Dr von Hagens to promote Body Worlds 4. Speaking about the show, and her agency's advertising work on their website, Access account director Ruth Peevor said: "BODY WORLDS already has a strong brand identity that has worked extremely well for them internationally. Our challenge was to take elements of the existing brand and creative executions that had worked in other territories and adapt them for the Manchester market. This is the first time the show has been seen outside of London in the UK, and we are very proud to have played our part in delivering it to the North West."
Access also works with the slightly less gruesome clients Turtlewax, Miele Die Kuche. The campaign will use 96 sheet large posters and bus advertising during the four months that Body Worlds will run for. www.accessadvertising.co.uk and go to press release for details.
